Japanese motorcycle and automobile manufacturer Honda has successfully tested a rocket capable of reversing in Hokkaido, Japan.

The successful test was reported in a statement released by Honda, which aims to expand its operations into the aerospace sector.

“The test was completely successful, marking the first time Honda has landed a rocket after reaching an altitude of nearly 300 meters,” the company said.

The six-meter-tall prototype flew for 11 minutes before landing just 37 centimeters from its designated landing spot.

In the statement, Honda also added that they chose to “take on the technological challenge of developing reusable rockets, leveraging Honda’s accumulated technology from developing various products and autonomous systems.”

According to the company, these rockets could be used in the future to deploy satellite communication tools, in line with expectations to create “a space-based data system.”

“Although Honda’s rocket research is still in the early stages and no decision has been made regarding the commercialization of these rocket technologies, Honda will continue conducting research with the goal of achieving the technological capacity to enable a suborbital launch by 2029,” the statement also said.
